COMMENTS AND REVIEWS
Miles from Home is an inspiring story of love, family, commitment, integrity and perseverance. It is GREAT!!!!!! I laughed, I cried, I gasped, I was riding in the car with you, I was sleeping on the floor with you, I was at the Hospice facility, I was right there with you in your emotional times.... WOW!!!! Brilliant words to print. Thank you for following your heart and writing the book. I think it will touch many emotions to all the people that read it and are told about it!

Oh my gosh are they going to make it?
That was the question that kept the pages turning and turning for me. This story will grab you right away and it is hard to put down. The raw and honest emotions are palpable through out the entire journey. You will laugh, you might cry and you will definitely think. Think about your own life, loved ones and the future. Is there someone in your life that would do this for you? Should there be? Are you the person that would do this for someone? The story is beautifully written so that you have a sense of what each person is individually experiencing and the best part is the much deserved closure. Bravo Colleen!

Honest, funny, heartbreaking and insightful (March 19, 2012)
Colleen presents the good, the bad and the ugly that caring for others brings in to our lives. Her straightforward writing provides an honest look at the way life often surprises us. The author realistically describes the experience of caregiving for two older adults, one with Alzheimer's and one with cancer, while struggling with her own changing personal relationship with their son while traveling halfway across the U.S. by car.
Her humor, intelligence and compassion shine through each chapter and I felt uplifted and hopeful in spite of the circumstances presented throughout her journey, both on and off the road. Her thoughts on death and dying are memorable.
Anyone who has struggled with caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's, who has had to make difficult end of life decisions for a parent, or who has struggled to end a relationship that no longer works, can appreciate this book.
This true account of meeting the unforeseen changes and challenges that life brings is an excellent example of staying true to yourself and not letting life's "baggage" weigh you down.

Grace, Humor, Hope
By Sonja Um-Siri (Minneapolis) - (May 12, 2012)
I stayed awake nights reading Colleen Lanier's "Miles from Home," a memoir of her Milwaukee-to-Seattle road trip helping her ex-boyfriend transport his dying father and advanced-stage-Alzheimer's mother to an assisted living facility. Couldn't put it down. Lanier writes in a straight-forward way, mincing no words. She is reflective without getting prosaic. Characters' exasperating quirks and moments of tender sweetness are all there. Messy nitty-gritty details of physical care are part of the picture she paints. Lanier presents her own personal emotions with frank candor. Just as you watch her journey of loving others with all their complications, you see her extend this process to herself.
We all have challenging experiences with painful transitions. "Miles from Home" reminded me that, if you keep your heart open in hard times, you can find grace, humor, and hope.
New Outlook on Life

This story will truly change the outlook on life that you have. This book had me in tears one moment and the next laughing in hysterics. The detail and grace that that was take to write this book about a true event in Colleen's life is a true treasure. While reading this story you truly feel that you are right along on this adventure each step of the way.
The moment that I started this book I knew that I could do nothing else until I finished it! It is an amazing story that takes you on a rollercoaster of emotions as you follow along. You just can't wait to find out what crazy, funny, exciting, or sometimes even sad event will come around the next turn.
I recommend that everyone read this book and truly take its message and words to heart. As you plan out the rest of your life and even the ending of it, remember all of the words spoken and lessons learned in this book.

Wise, funny, sad, inspiring and brutally honest
(April 8, 2012)
This is one of those books that haunt you. Long after you are done reading it you find yourself replaying scenes and conversations, wondering how you would have responded. I don't know if I could make the same choices the author did, but I respect what she did simply because it was the right thing to do (even when it was causing her pain). This book made me walk in someone else's shoes, realizing I had no idea what I would do if I needed to become my parent's guardian and decision maker with so little warning. Excellent book.
